This work analyzes the spatial and temporal distribution of the suspension sediment concentration (SSC) and its relationship with the changes that occurred in the Araguari estuary in recent years, which culminated in its closure. Four scenes of Landsat satellite imagery (years 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and samples of surficial water for SSC analysis were used. The scenes were processed by applying the atmospheric correction and were co-registered. The SSC values were estimated through a global empirical algorithm applied in other rivers of the Amazon region. The results showed an increase in the SSC in middle zone of the estuary. Such sediment flow was transported through a new channel that now connect the Amazon River to the Araguari River. The multitemporal analyzes revealed that in areas of higher CSS in the images, there were the formation of bars and banks inside the Araguari estuary. The estimated CSS data presented a good correlation with the data collected in situ, although tending to overestimate the concentration values. The results obtained demonstrate the possibility of using this technique to trace scenarios of changes in estuaries in the region.
